Haryana Digital Business Report 2026: 45+ Data Points on How Haryana Businesses Go Online

Quick answer: In June 2026 we surveyed 214 small and medium businesses across 11 Haryana cities and found 62% now have a website, 47% use at least one AI tool, and 51% say AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) has changed how their customers find them. Only 31% have a website that loads in under 3 seconds on mobile — a massive opportunity gap for local digital agencies.

This report is original primary research by the DigiHaryana team. All survey figures below are our own data, gathered in June 2026. Where we cite external sources (government, RBI, or industry studies), we link to them directly.

Methodology

We surveyed 214 business owners and senior decision-makers across Hansi, Hisar, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Rohtak, Panipat, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, and Sirsa in June 2026. The sample was weighted to match Haryana’s sector mix: 38% retail/trade, 24% agriculture-adjacent, 18% services, 12% manufacturing, 8% education/healthcare. Survey was conducted via in-person interviews and WhatsApp. Margin of error ±6.6% at 95% confidence.

Our methodology has limitations. This is a regional convenience sample, not a census. We publish it transparently so you can judge the findings — and we invite other researchers to replicate it.

1. Website Ownership: The 62% Have It, But Most Aren’t Working Hard Enough

Only 62% of Haryana SMBs have a website. For context, national data from the Ministry of Electronics & IT’s Digital India program shows Indian SMB website penetration still below 50% nationally, meaning Haryana’s semi-urban businesses are ahead of the national curve but far behind metros like Bengaluru or Gurugram.

More striking is the quality gap:

  • 31% have a website that loads in under 3 seconds on mobile (our audit threshold)
  • 58% of business websites have no SSL/HTTPS properly configured
  • 67% have no structured data (schema markup)
  • 44% haven’t updated their site in over a year

The takeaway: most Haryana businesses that are “online” are only half-online. They have a website that doesn’t rank, doesn’t load fast, and isn’t readable by AI search engines.

2. AI Adoption: 47% Use AI, and It’s Accelerating

47% of surveyed businesses use at least one AI tool. The most common uses:

  • ChatGPT for drafting replies and content (34%)
  • Canva AI for marketing creatives (22%)
  • WhatsApp business AI / automated replies (18%)
  • AI phone assistants for missed-call handling (9%)

This is up from a 28% baseline we measured in the same cities in 2025 — a 68% year-over-year increase in AI adoption.

Adoption skews young: 61% of businesses run by owners under 40 use AI, versus 22% of businesses run by owners over 50.

3. AI Search Is Already Changing How Customers Find Haryana Businesses

51% of respondents say AI search has changed how customers find them. When asked specifically:

  • 38% have noticed “AI summaries” (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT answers) at the top of their customers’ search results
  • 29% have been asked by a customer “what does ChatGPT say about you?”
  • Only 12% have ever checked their own brand’s appearance in AI answers

This matches national trends: Ahrefs’ 2026 analysis found AI Overviews now appear in a large share of searches, and their research on 75,000 brands showed that web mentions strongly predict AI citation. For small Haryana businesses with zero brand mentions online, the AI visibility gap is stark.

4. Digital Marketing Spend: Small, But Growing

Average reported monthly digital marketing spend across our sample:

CategoryAverage spend (INR/month)% of businesses spending
WhatsApp/social promotion₹2,10041%
Google Ads₹6,40019%
Meta (FB/IG) Ads₹4,80022%
SEO agency₹8,90011%
Nothing (organic only)₹028%

68% of businesses spend under ₹10,000/month total on digital. Yet 73% say their biggest acquisition channel is word-of-mouth or walk-ins — meaning the digital channel most are paying for isn’t yet their main growth driver.

5. What Haryana Businesses Want in 2026

We asked respondents to pick their top digital priority for the next 12 months:

  1. A faster, mobile-friendly website (34%)
  2. Ranking on Google for local searches (27%)
  3. Getting found in ChatGPT/AI answers (19%)
  4. Better social media content (12%)
  5. Online payments and e-commerce (8%)

The fact that 19% already prioritise AI search visibility is remarkable for semi-urban India — and it will only grow.

The Opportunity Gap

The data tells a clear story:

  1. Most Haryana businesses have a website, but most are technically weak (slow, unsecured, no schema)
  2. AI adoption is rising fast, and owners under 40 are driving it
  3. Customers are already asking AI about local businesses — and most businesses have no AI presence to be found
  4. Digital spend is small but growing, and 73% still rely on word-of-mouth

For businesses that act now — fix the website, build local SEO, and get structured data in place — there’s a genuine first-mover advantage in Haryana’s AI-search transition.
